Q&A Session with Tim Allen the Nokia C7 Product manager

Q&A with Tim Allen the Nokia C7 Product Manager

Thursday September 16, 2010

2:31

WOM World/Nokia:

Hi everyone, this C7 Q&A session
is starting at 3pm UK
time (that’s i9n about half an hour!)… So kick back and start thinking of
what you need to ask :)

3:00

WOM World/Nokia:

Ok, anyone got a question to kick things off?

3:02

[Comment From VIJAY]

Pardon my ignorance but I would like to know
about the processor and RAM etc

3:03

Tim Allen – Nokia C7 Product
Manager:

@Vijay Hi. The processor is 680MHz, and we have
256MB RAM. C: drive is 350MB.

3:04

[Comment From phessler]

What will be the differince
in pre-installed (and installable) apps between the C7 and say the N8 or
the E7?

3:04

diogonev:

I have another question. What is the target
market of the C7? Where does it “fit”?

3:06

Tim Allen – Nokia C7 Product
Manager:

@phessler Nokia C7
can instal all the same apps as the other devices
we launched. One common platform :-)

We pre-load different apps according to regional needs, so it’s hard to be
specific in this answer. But they are for the most part the same.

3:07

Yash Maheshwari:

Hi Tim, Is the camera lens on the C7 a carl zeiss lens or a normal
lens?

3:08

Tim Allen – Nokia C7 Product
Manager:

@diogonev From a
geographic perspective we expect to ship Nokia C7 globally. It appeals to
people who are new to “touch”.

3:08

[Comment From Abhinav]

Hi, I would like to know how far was the
software on the demo devices from the final Symbian^3 build?

3:08

[Comment From VIJAY]

When we can see HDMI port built in nokia phones ?

3:10

diogonev:

Why did you go for an 8MP full focus camera
instead of a 5MP auto-focus one? Perhaps even put some Carl Zeiss lens on it since the 5MP sensor should be a lot
cheaper than the 8MP one?

3:10

Tim Allen – Nokia C7 Product Manager:

@abhinav The software
we were demonstrating is very close to the final release, but it isn’t
quite final.

3:10

Tim Allen – Nokia C7 Product
Manager:

@vijay HDMI port is
included in Nokia N8 and Nokia E7.

3:12

Tim Allen – Nokia C7 Product Manager:

@diogonev – great
question! Full focus cameras appeal to users who take “grab”
shots, without any fuss. And we can pack 8MP full focus into the sleek
design. We figured it would give really good results, and so far our
consumers are impressed with it.

3:13

[Comment From phessler]

For FOTA updates, will there be a single update
that will apply to all C7′s regardless of where purchased (country,
operator, etc), or will we still have fragmented firmware updates?

3:15

[Comment From VIJAY]

Does it support 3d graphics ?

3:15

[Comment From
varanus261]

will we start to see stylish
accessories like audio docks etc for the C7 and future releases.

3:15

diogonev:

Can we expect some serious marketing for the C7
(or any of the new phones really) or will the ads be dominated by the
competition? *cough* Samsung *cough* Apple *cough*

3:17

Tim Allen – Nokia C7 Product
Manager:

@phessler FOTA is a
really big thing for us. As soon as we implement software updates we want
to get them out to you as quickly as possible. But we have to go through a
lot of operator testing, and this takes time. Sometimes several months. We
aim to improve the uptake of FOTA updates in Nokia C7 and are pushing this
really hard. I expect you’ll notice the improvement!

3:18

Tim Allen – Nokia C7 Product
Manager:

@Yash Maheshwari – Actually no. We use Carl Zeiss lenses on our autofocus cameras. The FullFocus technology does not need that quality of
lens.

3:20

Tim Allen – Nokia C7 Product
Manager:

@varanus261 Well not specifically audio docks,
no. Our audio is ported through the industry-standard 3.5mm AV connector.

3:21

Bradley:

what’s the difference between
full focus and auto focus and why was it chosen over auto focus?

3:22

[Comment From VIJAY]

I like the fact that C7 does have hardware keys
I want, I hated the fact the N8 doesn’t have call/end call button, Kudos to
you guys for creating such a great product :)

3:22

Tim Allen – Nokia C7 Product
Manager:

@vijay It’s great to
hear your thoughts about the keys – thanks for commenting on it! We spent a
lot of time researching that, and looking at the way users interact with
our devices. We believe Nokia C7 users will appreciate those keys.

3:23

diogonev:

Ok, big question: Will the C7 be upgradable to
Symbian^4?

3:26

Tim Allen – Nokia C7 Product
Manager:

@diogonev Yes, you
will certainly see some significant marketing behind Nokia C7.

3:27

[Comment From Zohaib]

Most people comparing C7 with N8, I personally dont think it has a comparision.
. what do u have to say about that?

3:28

Tim Allen – Nokia C7 Product
Manager:

@Bradley Great question! Full focus uses EDOF
technology to keep everything from around 1m to infinity in focus. It
doesn’t use any moving lenses so is a very slim component, ideally suited
to something like Nokia C7. Autofocus has moving parts so is rather bigger.

3:30

Tim Allen – Nokia C7 Product
Manager:

@Zohaib – Well I hope
we’ve got something for everyone with the great range of devices we
announced this week. Nokia N8 will appeal to people who want the absolute
best performance in terms of camera resolution and optics, combined with
Dolby Digital with all the bells and whistles. Nokia C7 produces great
results for consumers who don’t want to go quite that far.

3:32

[Comment From siraj]

Hi Tim does c7 have a dedicated GPU>?

3:33

diogonev:

Actually adding to Siraj
question: if it has a dedicated GPU can you tell us what model?

3:34

[Comment From gerrymoth]

We need native divx
player capability in the C7 why haven’t Nokia made this so?

3:35

Bradley:

cool, i
like that.

3:36

Tim Allen – Nokia C7 Product
Manager:

@gerrymoth – fair
point. As with all these things there’s a delicate balance to make when
designing these products, and it’s hard to get it absolutely right for
everyone.

3:37

[Comment From gerrymoth]

Will you be supplying a nice leather case to
protect how lovely looking the C7 is? My wife destroys phones and she would
love this phones looks, but I’d be replacing for her after 3 months when
she scratches and breaks that lovely screen.

3:37

Tim Allen – Nokia C7 Product
Manager:

@diagonov Yes, we
have a dedicated GPU and we can support 3D graphics.

3:37

Tim Allen – Nokia C7 Product
Manager:

@gerrymoth – I know
exactly what you mean! Yes, we have a nice range of leather cases to
protect the phone. We don’t include it in the box, since we know that
different people have different tastes. But there’s a good range to choose
from.

3:39

Tim Allen – Nokia C7 Product
Manager:

@diogonev – well
these things are in constant state of evolution and we believe we’re
offering a great solution with Symbian^3 right now.

3:40

Bradley:

i believe the C7 will do
better than the N8 in term of sales. there are a
lot of consumers like me that don’t own hi def tvs
or surround sound systems. apart from the hardware
and a few software differences there isn’t much really to separate these
devices.

3:41

Tim Allen – Nokia C7 Product
Manager:

@jade. Yes! Nokia C7 supports A-GPS and we’re
getting great performance from it.

3:42

[Comment From jade]

Is the GPS on C7 working well? unlike on some previous devices that there are issues
about the GPS locking.

3:42

Yash Maheshwari:

Is the Digital compass present in the C7?

3:43

Tim Allen – Nokia C7 Product
Manager:

@Yash Maheshwari – Yes, it sure does. It’s got me out of
trouble on a couple of occasions already!

3:43

Tim Allen – Nokia C7 Product
Manager:

@Bradley – well thanks for that. Yes,
I think you’ve got it absolutely right.

3:44

[Comment From Nemo]

Will non-operator Symbian^3 phones be all
updated at the same time or will you have different updates for the C7, C6,
N8 and E7?

3:44

[Comment From gerrymoth]

Tim you should supply a basic case at least, its sometimes the little things that matter?

3:46

diogonev:

Given the superior cost why do you
think someone should go to the C7 instead of the C6-01?

3:46

Tim Allen – Nokia C7 Product
Manager:

@Nemo.
Actually FOTA software upgrades will happen at different times for different
products. This is because they don’t all start selling at the same time, and
consumers sometimes get tired of upgrades being pushed to their phones so
soon after purchase. We get these updates out to consumers as quickly as we
possibly can, and we work really hard to do that.

3:47

Bradley:

will there be a C7 variant with a
full qwerty keyboard or are you sticking with that form factor

3:48

Tim Allen – Nokia C7 Product
Manager:

@gerrymoth
- I understand your comment, but it’s still quite hard. Which colour? Which
style? Expensive? Cheap? We know that lots of users don’t use those cases,
and when they’ve paid for something they’re not using, they don’t think we’ve
put much effort into considering their real needs. It’s a really tricky one.
Ultimately we leave it to the consumer to make the final choice.

3:50

Tim Allen – Nokia C7 Product
Manager:

@diagonov
Well we like to have something for everyone – that’s the way a range of
products really works well. Nokia C7 has a slightly larger display than Nokia
C6-01. It also has larger memory (8GB), FM Transmitter and Active Noise
Cancellation. Nokia C6-01 is a compact device which fits beautifully in your
hand, and is at a lower cost. You can choose which device suits you best!

3:52

Carlton Lindow
Jr:

hi, everyone sorry i’m late

3:54

[Comment From Artem Kulyk]

What third party applications will be preloaded
to Nokia C7? How did you choose applications for installation to C7? Does individual developers have a chance to preload
their apps to new Nokia devices? Thank you.

3:54

Yash Maheshwari:

So does the Camera support saving the
Direction info to the EXIF data of the images? Nokia Betalabs
had released an experiment app called Nokia Image Space to enable this
functionality on the current Symbian phones which include
a digital compass.

3:54

Tim Allen – Nokia C7 Product
Manager:

@Artem Kulyk – We choose applications to preload based on what
works best for our consumers. Nokia C7 will be sold globally, and language
coverage is really important – it’s hard to preload an app which isn’t
localised in all languages. If we can’t preload it, we try to make it
available through Ovi Store.

3:55

WOM World/Nokia:

Hey Carlton, still time to ask a question if
you have one :)

3:55

Tim Allen – Nokia C7 Product
Manager:

@Bradley – Nokia C7 is all about
getting a beautifully sleek design to work really well. We’ve put heaps of
effort into getting the haptics working well so
that typing on the virtual qwerty is a real joy. Try it and see what it feels
like!

3:57

[Comment From corbas_ai]

Is Nokia C7 Skype ready?

3:57

Tim Allen – Nokia C7 Product
Manager:

@corbas_ai
Yes, it is.

3:57

[Comment From Tom]

Why doesn’t the C7 have “Clear Black
Display”? The C6-01 has it, but the C7 is a higher tiered phone than
the C6, no?

3:57

Carlton Lindow
Jr:

Why doesn’t the C7 have a 12MP camera
like the N8?

3:59

WOM World/Nokia:

Thanks everyone, that’s about it for
questions now :)

3:59

Tim Allen – Nokia C7 Product
Manager:

@Yash Maheshwari – good question. Nokia C7 camera certainly
supports EXIF data, but to be honest I can’t answer that – I don’t know. But
I can get an answer for you asap.

3:59

Yash Maheshwari:

@Carlton, That question has already
been answered before in this session :)

4:00

[Comment From VIJAY]

how’s the audio performance
of c7 through loudspeaker ?

4:01

Yash Maheshwari:

Tim, I was really hoping Nokia would
have gradutated that technology and included it in
S^3. That would really take our photo memories to the next step. If possible,
Please try & find out about it :)

4:01

Tim Allen – Nokia C7 Product
Manager:

@Tom – This is a good question, and
I’m afraid it’s always a balance. We can’t always get everything we want into
the design. We believe we’ve got it right, but take a look at the display on Nokia
C7 for yourself, and see what you think.

4:01

diogonev:

Very enlightening! Thanks for all the
answers Tim. And thanks to Wom World for the
invite!

4:02

Bradley:

in the demo
videos i’ve seen from the Nokia World, some swipes
didn’t register and had to be done again. was it the units or software

4:02

WOM World/Nokia:

Thanks Dio

4:03

Tim Allen – Nokia C7 Product
Manager:

@Vijay. Sorry for the delay… I
can’t keep up with all these great questions! Ideally we would have put two
speakers into the phone. But we just couldnt‘ do
that without compromising the overal sleek design.
It is quite loud, but there will always be people who want it louder!

4:03

Yash Maheshwari:

I second Dio’s
thoughts. Thanks guys & Tim for answering the questions patiently :)

4:04

WOM World/Nokia:

We need to end the questions here
guys… Much appreciated :)

4:04

Carlton Lindow
Jr:

wouldn’t a 4 inch
display fix in well on a slim device like the c7?, bigger screens are what
everyone is going for.

4:05

Tim Allen – Nokia C7 Product
Manager:

@Bradley – hey, well spotted. We
noticed that too, and we’re really mad with the Nokia guys who did that! We
can see from the video that they were using early hardware and R&D
software, which they shouldn’t have done. We’re hunting those guys down…

4:05

Bradley:

you’re welcome WOM
World/Nokia. it was very informative

  1. Can’t understand positive comments about C7. I had the disgrace of buying this equipment. Calls are being canceled all the time. Went to Nokia Portugal and Vodafone several times and all I receive is one stupid explanation after another.

  2. Hi , im using nokia c7-00. I couldn’t on my loudspeaker when I’m on skype with my phone. And since it’s a touch screen , there’s no button for loudspeaker. Pls advise. Thanks
